Re-visiting the traditional Korean lantern - Cheongsachorong 청사초롱

A modern take on the traditional lamp / lantern from South Korea. Because traditional Chorong / Hanji candles from Korea are usually only seen in Korea. And even in Korea, these lanterns are used during traditional holidays, celebrations, or at traditional Korean palaces. I wanted to design a new way of displaying the lantern with modernism for a breath of fresh air and to make them more portable.

tools used: paper, cardboard, medium thick birch wood, candles, tape, red yarn, gold paint, wood glue.

Expanding culture through experience and interactivity

Creating an experience through lighting up an environment in space and time by using traditional methods of light and storytelling.

I wanted to re-design the traditional Korean lanterns with an addition to an interactive element from the open flames of a candle. I wanted a rich experience that allows the candle holder to feel the historical elements of the lantern but still have a modern touch to it.
